Virgle’s Thoughts on the Oregon Legislative Session

The Democrats and Governor failed Oregonians this session. They failed to address key issues such as education and homelessness and even restricted our 2nd Amendment rights.

Gun Rights

The omnibus gun control bill signed into law early last month encroaches on our rights to keep and bear arms. One of the bills, SB 2510, mandates that firearms must be locked away (with a cable or trigger lock) or stored when not in use. SB 554 gives cities the power to ban firearms in public place such as parks and the Capitol.

Education

Oregon ranks near the bottom graduation rates. How do the Democrats respond? They passed a bill that removes the educational standards needed to graduate. SB 774 removed the requirement that students demonstrate basic proficiency in math, reading, and writing to earn a high school diploma. They are failing our kids.

Homelessness

HB 3124 and HB 3155 increases the time that written notice must be posted before the removal of homeless people from camps and restricts city authority on dealing with the homeless issue as a whole. HB 3115 requires local laws that regulate sitting, lying, sleeping, etc. outdoors on public property must be “objectively reasonable.” These laws do not address how to get them off the street and provide them with the tools necessary to stay off our street. The homeless are our most vulnerable population and our state has neglected them for far too long.
